5 tips for better carpet protection surface protection

| Print | E-mail

1. Test your carpet to determine suitability.  Apply a sample in a remote location for testing.
2. Do not install self-adhering poly-films over damp or wet carpet.  Adhesive will transfer.
3. Do not traffic on carpet protection film without certifying it is firmly adhering to the carpet and is wrinkle free.  Carpet protection film should be checked frequently to be certain installation conditions have not changed.
4. Excessive traffic and exposure to sunlight or intense heat will shorten the useable life of carpet protection film.  Such conditions may cause adhesive transfer.
5. Do not allow carpet protection film to lap onto adjacent smooth flooring surfaces, the adhesive will transfer.

Tub Surface Protection During Construction

Tub and Bath Liquid Mask can be applied and left in place for as long as twelve months with no adverse affects on the finished coat’s surface integrity.  It will retain its installed properties when submerged, as in a plumbing fixture wet test, for up to 48 hours.  However, there will be a discoloration until the protective coating dries.

1.  Before applying this product the surface should be free from dust, abrasive materials, oil, moisture, and any other substance that may damage the surface.
2.  Do not apply this product when surface or ambient temperature is below 40 degrees F.  Keep this product from freezing.  Materials that are frozen will separate and can not be reconstituted.

Fast, Agile Floor Protection

80 mil thick and with a non-porous backing, floor runner is a quick and flexible way of protecting hardwood and finished floors during construction. The non-slip backing clings to the floor surface when weighted and then releases when the weight is removed.  When not weighted the runner is light and stays in place without using adhesives or tapes.

Remember that new floor finishes need to “cure” before applying surface protection and are not considered “cured” when dry to the touch. Consult floor finish manufacturer's specs. Additionally, floor runner is slip-resistant on a clean smooth floor.  If dust or other fine particles accumulate under the Runner it will lose its slip resistant properties.  Cleaning the backing under surface of the runner can restore its slip-resistance property.

Carpet Protection Film on Adhesive Set Carpets

When installing carpet protection film on carpet that has been adhesive set, follow the adhesive manufacturer’s direction to be certain the adhesive is fully cured; adhesives give off a “gas” during the curing period which can cause adhesive transfer from Pro Tect for Carpets and other tapes.

For the Best Installation:  It may be necessary to vacuum your carpet to assure the best adherence of Pro Tect for Carpets.  Carpet manufacturers and installers may not take care to remove the residue left from manufacturing or installing your carpet.

Hardwood Stair and Floor Protection

Finished Floor Guard can be an excellent protector for hardwood stairs and floors during construction. Builders should remember to tape edges in order to prevent tripping and to protect from liquid spills. Remember to apply only on completely cured and dry finished hardwood floors and stairs.

Finish Floor Guard can be used with in-floor radiant heat (with no additional sheet goods applied.)  The National Wood Flooring Association guidelines for maximum wood floor surface temperatures (85 f) should never be exceeded.

Surface Protection for Finished Windows

Construction projects often must work around finished windows. Builders can save time and money with window protection film. Adhesive backed, window film requires no tape or razor blade scraping upon removal. It lasts for up to 45 days.

As with all surface protection do not expose window film to excessive heat or install onto wet or damp surfaces. Window film protects more than just glass surfaces. Window film is safe to use on glass, lexion, polyglass, aluminum, painted steel, high-gloss enamel and vinyl window frames. Varnishes, shellac, and polyurethane finishes won’t be harmed its application.

Carpet Protection Film by the Numbers

To ensure carpet protection film protects carpet and does not cause adhesive transfer remember these numbers:

45 days - Don't leave film on longer than this.

10,000 to 15,000 people - don't use where traffic will exceed this.

100 degrees F - Don't Expose carpet film to extreme temperatures.

H2O - Do not install on wet or damp carpet.

Before Installing Finished Surface Protection

Make sure your finished floors and clean and dry. For hardwood floors make sure flooring application is cured completely - check the floor covering manufacturer specs. Use tape to seal edges. Never use on newly layed stone or porous stone. Moisture can cause stains if wet surfaces are covered.

Estimate construction site traffic and building materials to be used. Rosin paper is still a value staple for light traffic, and light building materials sites. PolyCraft Mask and Finished Floor Guard are upgrades that can take a heavier traffic load and protect from more caustic building materials.

When Floor Protection Needs More Than Rosin Paper

When the next construction project calls for hardwood finished floors, or for any finished floors - wood or marble - that will be subject to heavy construction traffic and rosin paper won't cut it - think Polycraft Mask.

Water proof and breathable, this product is very popular when high traffic or expensive floors need protection. Using three ply materials - Polycraft Mask gives builders a choice upgraded when looking for floor protection solutions that go a step beyond regular rosin paper.

Only Use Water Based Carpet Protection Film

| Print | E-mail

Carpet protection can be a significant cost and time saving measure during remodeling and building projects - but make sure the carpet protection film used on carpets during construction is water based.

There are many cheap, oil-based films out there, these can cause staining, are less dependable, and are more difficult to uninstall. Use only 45 day grade, water-based carpet protection film on the next project to ensure cost and time saving.
